I like the idea that “everyone is your teacher” and we can listen to those with whom we agree or disagree and take away some valuable thought(s), and that one-hundred percent agreement or disagreement aren’t the only two choices.
All things exist more or less on a continuum but humans tend to reduce things to polar extremes out of fear or biases. I value the exchange of ideas. I think the process is more important than outcome sometimes. We are all free to listen to something and then walk away from it – either embracing some…parts…or all of something….
As most days, while working I put on something to listen to. This first talk is over three hours and I’m only a half hour in and am finding it interesting enough to pass along.
Bret Weinstein is an evolutionary biologist and podcaster I have been following in recent months. This talk’s title mentions the expected content, but don’t let any bias keep you from listening to this talk if you are inclined because you will think about a number of interrelated things.
The first part is interesting because they are discussing the human brain and comparisons to computer encoding – which is plenty to think about – and they are moving into discussion of artificial intelligence and so much more.
One interesting statement is that technological advances need an “undo” feature. This idea reminds me of the Pandora’s Box tale and has a lot of implications. Once something is out there, how do we step backwards when mistakes are realized.
Or do we simply keep marching forward, digging in deeper and deeper into dangerous territories? This has so many applications. I think immediately of nuclear weapons.
The other two high-quality talks I recently discovered are of great importance for our medical/ethical/political considerations in these unusual times.
This third link I shared in another post recently, and has information on why this title should be ignored in knee-jerk fashion. FREE-FLOATING ANXIETY, SOLIDARITY AND MASS FORMATION
