From the Ends of the Earth

Rabbit holes and fox holes
From deep within I come up for a moment of air
And I call out to Him

Hear my cry, O God;
    listen to my prayer.
From the ends of the earth I call to you,
    I call as my heart grows faint;
    lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
For you have been my refuge,
    a strong tower against the foe.
 I long to dwell in your tent forever
    and take refuge in the shelter of your wings.
For you, God, have heard my vows;
    you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name.

Psalm 61:1-5

It can be easy these days to get lost in thoughts, slipping deep into various rabbit holes like Alice in Wonderland–unsure of that which I am seeing and experiencing. That sentence probably sounds more intense and nebulous than need be; the human condition is that of contemplation and sentience. The human condition is one of recognizing our human needs, frailties, worries and weaknesses and most importantly, our ultimate powerlessness and need for God.

Perhaps a rabbit hole or a fox hole serves as some kind of shelter–a refuge of sorts when we are in the throes of our humanity and fragility.

But then comes the moment when we get a glimpse–I’m in this deeply and am in human need.

And from there, even in a moment, we reach to God. We call out to Him in some way from these ends of the earth. Because, the tunnels we are running through in our soul are seemingly irrepairable…

__________

About a half hour after composing this, I am somehow reminded of the thought that He is present with us inside our “rabbit holes.” Jesus is walking alongside us in the deep, dark tunnels…sometimes we feel His presence, other times we perceive absence and confusion.

To cognitively maintain and acknowledge an awareness of Him that transcends our moments, leads us forward. Or at least, help us to keep waiting for the light of day…
