Vindicating Margaret

Since Sunday afternoon (July 3) of my recent trip to Buckhannon, I have had a somewhat unusual internal experience and process that seems to be unfolding within me, in an unexpected and potentially interesting and healing way. They say we must pursue truth, wherever that leads us.It sometimes seems everyone has their own truth. Even Pilate said to Jesus, “What is truth?” In all human conflicts there seems that one person’s truth is pitted against another’s. Or one political group...

by Eileen Slifer An Illustrated Short Story Written February 4, 2006 based on recollections of a true event “Life is like a movie in which you get to play the part in a scene just once, experiencing the sequence of events with all its sights, sounds, and subtleties in moments of time, leaving you nothing but mental and emotional replay for years to come.” That I was a particularly clever or devious child I would not describe myself as such....

Why Am I a Woman?

There’s a conversation going on these days about what it means to be a woman. I recently watched a documentary which set out to find out the answer to a simple question, “What is a Woman?” I’ve done a lot of thinking about my own womanhood over the years and what that means to me, and to others. After watching this amazing documentary, I thought I would ask on social media the same question and see what responses came. But,...

And After Job Gushed Out, He Got Invited to an Argument – (Part IV Job 4-5)

In recent times, a friend sent me a meme, “You don’t have to attend every argument you are invited to.” When I say a friend, I mean, truly, a friend. This friend is one who has provided comfort to me in difficult times, and hopefully I have provided the same, to her. There is a beautiful quotation about friendship which says: “A friend is one to whom one may pour out the contents of one’s heart, chaff and grain together,...

God Encourages Us to Imagine

As I went about my errands late this afternoon on this hot summer day, I happened to look down at the black asphalt in a parking lot and noticed this tiny dead bird. Immediately I paused to stare at it. While some might want to look away from such a sight, I thought about this little fallen bird in terms of the words of Jesus to us, while in the store. And when I returned to my vehicle, I snapped...

I Wish I Had Never Conceived You

I was standing in my mother’s kitchen, in my childhood home. I was in the same kitchen where my father had stood over the sink six years earlier on a Friday evening in early May, arguing with my mother, while having a heart attack. I was trying to get past my mother and out the back door, and she stood on the step or two between the kitchen and the back door landing. She was holding the wrought-iron railing and...

Carter Was Particularly “Violent” Toward Me

Eventually I will be writing and elaborating more on the contents of my mother’s 1945/1946 diary. I took some of her diaries with me on my getaway to Buckhannon in case I wanted to study them more closely. On Sunday evening, after taking a drive out to the old Weston Hospital (now the Trans-Alleghany Lunatic Asylum) and taking some photos and going in parts of the first floor, I came back to the hotel and began reading through her writings....

Post-Humous RX for Best Meds to ‘Fix My Mother’

Preface:(This piece was written August 11, 2016 – I found this in my “Writings” files I brought on my getaway to Buckhannon, WVA this weekend. I was re-reading it and decided I wanted to add it to my blog. I recall being in the earlier stages of meeting with a therapist in Alabama and sharing as much as I could about my own upbringing as context to the situation I had found myself in and how it was affecting me...

My Mother Was Also Fearfully and Wonderfully Made

Parts of Psalm 139, NIV: “For you formed my inward parts;     you knitted me together in my mother’s womb… for I am fearfully and wonderfully made… My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret,     intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them,     the days that were formed for me,     when as yet there was none of them…” This is a pictorial companion piece...

Is My Life Supposed to be This Way?

Yesterday I spent a large part of my day on and off painting on two different paintings in my studio – one a commissioned wedding event painting, and the other, a landscape started in Buckannon, West Virginia a week ago today. On any given day, I have a lot in my mind. I’m just that kind of person, I suppose… Lots of contemplations of all sorts – often both comedy and tragedy, filled with both humor and deep empathic thoughts,...
