She Made Her Own Shroud

May 16, 2023

Mary Dalton (Williams) would be my maternal great great great grandmother.

I’ve been reading through various family history in connection with some of my writings here. I was contemplating that one of the things my great grandmother (Margaret Jane Kennedy Carter) most recalled when she gave contributions to this extensive collection of genealogy and stories, was that her grandmother made her own shroud.

Out of curiosity I did a quick search on making your own shroud to see if it was “a thing” back then. Apparently, it is a contemporary endeavor of some.

Confronting one’s own death is both brave and something I can’t imagine doing in that manner. My ancestor Mary Dalton was a deeply devout Christian, according to family references. So it would make sense that she would prepare her own self spiritually in this manner.

Personally, it feels too creepy to think about too deeply. There’s both a beauty and a creepiness I suppose, which reflects how most of us might feel in contemplating our own death. Even when we maintain hope of resurrection, there is the human fear of the unknown.
