Is a Veneer Sometimes the Best Choice?

December 24, 2024

The idea of “fake it til you make it” and other forms of positive thinking or “manifesting” is not to be found in the bible, yet, even Christians fall back upon such practices–and especially at the holidays.

I have no answers, I suppose.

I am about to contribute to the vast number of social media expressions and images that will flood our newsfeed between now and the New Year, too. As we behold all of these things, many of us (actually most of us) will only be able to discern the veneer from the real deal if we have more intimate knowledge of our friends and each situation.

But what adds to the muddy condition of it all is the fact that even a veneer or a band-aid may conceal very real things and even protect and preserve, at least for a time, something of value. So in a sense, sometimes using a veneer of some sort actually is the very best choice.

I think of a CS Lewis quote which seems to be one of my “go to” ideas, applicable in most every situation.

“One never meets just Cancer, or War, or Unhappiness (or Happiness).
One only meets each hour or moment that comes.
All manner of ups and downs. Many bad spots in our best times, many good ones in our worst.
One never gets the total impact of what we call ‘the thing itself’. But we call it wrongly.
The thing itself is simply all these ups and downs: the rest is a name or an idea.”

― C. S. Lewis

I also think of the short truce during Christmas in 1914, amidst the first World War.
