Understanding and Recognizing the Straw Man

February 16, 2023

Recognizing the set-up of a straw man which one can easily then knock down in a seemingly-logical argument is a valuable skill.

I can’t say I can immediate recognize/identify/verbalize the straw man when I see or hear him being constructed. I’m not always quick on the uptake but often my mind/gut will tell me something is wrong here in the logic long before I can pinpoint it.

This talk is interesting since they identify/deconstruct a particular straw man argument recently used in critique of them and their rational arguments regarding aspects of covid issues. Unlike many unqualified, government-or-corporately assigned fact-checkers, Bret Weinstein and his wife, Heather, are actual scientists with broader understandings of inter-disciplinary logic.

I invite you to listen to this clip to generate thoughtful consideration of relevant issues. I subscribe to the Darkhorse Podcast and find the talks quite interesting.

For more consideration, I invite you to listen to this speech as well. It is a glimpse of second-generation thought/implications about the creation of straw men. First comes the demonization of the straw men, then comes the censorship of free speech through the so-called fact checkers, next comes the weaponization (and legal codification) of such constructs.

Hats off to former Hawaii Democrat Tulsi Gabbard for calling things what they are.

    1. I appreciate your sharing both of these things. I hadn’t heard them. I didn’t listen all the way through to either, and I don’t know whether Tulsi Gabbard relates to the idea of a straw man, but no matter. It is so important that false and/or corrupt ideas get seriously challenged!

      1. Thank you. And I added in a few sentences to better clarify my thought process of why I included the second video with Tulsi Gabbard. It had popped up around the time I was forming the straw man piece and I included, but do see it was a bit unclear the connection! Agree on the challenging of false and/or corrupt ideas.
