“I Said Tomorrow, the Lord Said Today”

December 6, 2021

I get excited when Spotify introduces me to a new musical artist that I fall in love with! This past weekend, it was Mean Mary.

She has quite a voice and talent! Great guitar and banjo, and amazingly creative YouTube videos. And it appears she writes her own songs.

By listening to more of her works, I found a number of very spiritual and Christian-based lyrics. That’s an even bigger plus – a musical artist that is spiritual and Christian but doesn’t label themselves as that. I find the spiritual expressions of these musical artists often (and sadly) deeper and more genuinely creative than others who promote run-of-the-mill music.

How exciting! I must wonder if what holds Christian music artists back is fear of being genuine, transparent and down-to-earth? I like musical art that uses the full range of human expressions, personally.

I mean…what “Christian musical artist” would call themselves “Mean Mary?!!!”

(There’s a story to how she got that name).

If you love music, check her out.

Music gets me through many a day here and I get excited to share things I find inspiring.

________

The song that first appealed to my ear is called Sweet Jezebel. With a title like that, I wondered what it was about. It sounded fantastic but I did listen many times to the lyrics and in doing so, was “wow’ed” by the creative and spiritual message in the song, written without fear of using all types of metaphor and human sentiments.

I later read in her bio that when she was 23 years old she was actually the passenger in an automobile accident where she went through the windshield. It appeared for about a year that one of her vocal chords was damaged, but it later healed. (See Wikipedia) It makes me wonder if the song was somehow inspired by her personal experience. I didn’t see many other details about that accident in 2003.

I did find a YouTube of her as a child on a TV show singing “Long Tall Texan.” I read she could read music before she could read.

How interesting!

Anyway, just taking a now half-hour fifteen minute break (Oh I love WordPress now….can put things up more quickly!) to share this song and some others. Am really enjoying this as I work right now packaging orders. I looked up the video below to What About Today?…kind of interesting and creatively simple…she just keeps moving forward and backwards with her load while the song plays, with lyrics.

Enjoy!

What About Today?

(music and lyrics by Mary James & Jean James)

Was this my final trouble

Has it come and gone?

The Lord answered softly,

“There’s another coming on”

Will it come tomorrow?

Can’t I hide away?

He said, “You could stand and face it

It could come today”

CHORUS

I said, Tomorrow – The Lord said, “Today”

He said, “You can do better, you can kneel right now and pray”

I said, Tomorrow – He said, “Tomorrow’s far away”

I said, How about tomorrow, Lord? – He said, “What about today?”

My neighbor needs my help again

But right now I can’t delay

Maybe later on this week

Does it have to be today?

God said, “Later is a travesty

You could wait your life away

Tomorrow may not happen

But what about today?”

CHORUS

Will this be my last chance

To try, or is it gone?

The Lord answered softly,

“There’s another coming on

Though lions roar and people war,

You can’t keep life at bay

You can’t trust luck or destiny

But I am here today”

Here’s some other of her works.
