Our relationship with Jesus is the most personal and precious and open and vulnerable relationship we can imagine and cultivate. In my view, it is one where there are no rules. No right or wrong way to talk to Him and with Him.
Because we can trust that the gentlest of hands – His hands – will sift through the wheat and the chaff of our expressions – keeping and especially acting upon what He knows to be good, right and needed…and with the breath of His kindness blow the rest away…
Every once in awhile in the process of my calling out to Jesus in need, I suddenly find a sense of some unspeakable and very personal connection – an image, concept or thought is impressed upon me that somehow helps or eases and releases my burden in that moment.
Recently I had one of these experiences.
I hope and want it to be lasting and a changer of my prayers and thoughts when needed. Scripture tells us that Jesus is Mediator between God and man. (1 Timothy 2:5)
We need a Mediator because of the deep brokenness of our relationship with our Creator, God our Father.
As I was praying through some difficulties somehow the idea of Jesus’ role as Mediator came into my thoughts and I sensed that it would be appropriate to ask Jesus to apply His gift of mediation between me and various people in my life.
Since the human condition of brokenness with our Creator so clearly is seen – extending and permeating into all our relationships often leaving us with feelings of powerlessness and helplessness to fix any of them – why wouldn’t Jesus, our personal Mediator, make Himself fully available to extend and permeate into all these relationships that we find so broken and troubling?
If you are like me, we are lost at times for the words to pray or ask for that which we hope and need.
In many ways I try to keep my prayers simple. God already is an intimate witness to the plethora of my difficult and swirling thoughts and painful places. I see no need to reiterate these because He knows them full well. Instead, I tend to turn toward more nonverbal and simplistic
uplifting with simple words and emotions. (Psalm 139:2)
However, this is not always the case. Sometimes I am very specific – even writing my prayers out in some fashion. I don’t think there is any right way or wrong way to pray, and especially, no formula. We must keep our prayers, living and breathing – even when we learn helpful tools to facilitate.
Jesus talks about going into our prayer closet – a secret place which is so personal and intimate for each person. This prayer closet is not a literal place although it certainly could be. I know the literal places that lend themselves to being my most personal inter-sanctums of prayer. (Matthew 6:6)
Yet He is available to us anywhere, anytime…from the ends of the earth, we can call to Him… (Psalm 61:2)
I hope that this will encourage someone somehow in some small way. We all go through seasons of deep difficulties – spiritually, emotionally and in a host of other trials, some of which can appear to have no end…
Jesus is our Friend that sticks closer than a brother. (Proverbs 18:24)
I am feeling grateful for this little peek I sense that He gave me into yet a new shorthand of communication between Him and I.
Jesus. Mediator. I need you to mediate. Amen.
